Spaceport Sustainability

Located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia at Wallops Island, The Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) is one of only four public launch facilities in the United States. Managed by Virginia Spaceport Authority (VSA), MARS was established to meet the ever-growing demand for safe and cost-efficient access to space, and has become the premier launch site for small- and mid-class rocket systems. MARS has served as the launch site for historic missions to Low-Earth Orbit, including the International Space Station, and The Moon!  Teens will explore one of the essential aspects of Virginia Spaceport Authority's operations- sustainability. While VSA expands its launch facilities to meet the demand for access to space, it also strategically works to preserve and protect the national asset that is MARS. Explore spaceport sustainability with Sonia Watson, VSA Safety Program Manager, and learn how she oversees environmental monitoring programs that help mitigate the impact of launch activities. Model her research through a hands-on water quality simulation that is conducted after rocket launches, then learn about VSA student opportunities from Dana Wright, VSA Education Specialist.
